Millitant is a self taught recording artist, producer, engineer and song writer who is currently signed to the Manchester based record label, Whatage Music.
Oliver Garfield Carby, more popularly known as Millitant, is the first of twins, born on the 30th of June in the year 1987. Though he was born in Kingston, Jamaica, he grew up in Portmore, St. Catherine, where he attended Rehoboth Basic and Independence City All Age Schools. At the age of seven, his mother, who was a song writer and a lover of music, moved to Top Hill, St. Elizabeth. There he attended the Top Hill Primary School and B.B. Coke Comprehensive High School. He also attended the Junction Vocational Training Centre in St. Elizabeth where he studied carpentry and received a level one certificate.
Millitant’s introduction to music came through his mother. He used to sing along with her at home until he built up the courage to perform one of the songs she wrote at his Primary School. After receiving a favorable response from the students and teachers, his path was decided.
Once he got to high school he started writing songs and performing for small audiences on a regular basis. The feedback from his friends motivated him; hence he recorded his first demo and began to take his career as an artist very serious. At the time he called himself OJ (O for Oliver, his first name and J for Junior which is from his father). The name Millitant came later when a rhythm driven project entitled Military Riddim was released by Renaissance and it was suggested that he changed his name to Millitant. As time went on he began to pay attention to, and pull inspiration from more established artists like Bob Marley, Sean Paul, Beenie Man, Vybz Kartel and Bounty Killer. As he got more involved in the industry, he taught himself how to make beats and mix songs. He became very optimistic about advancing in the music business and very confident that he would take his career to the highest level. Armed with encouragement from his family and friends, Millitant persevered, never losing faith even when the future looked dim.
In 2015, Millitant met Courtney Johnson, CEO and producer at Whatage Music. Courtney heard his songs, recognized his talent and decided to enter into a production and management agreement with him. Since signing, Millitant has released a mixtape and several singles, namely: “Hell Already,” “Jam World,” “Be Strong,” “Be Sure,” and “Music & Melodies.” He is currently working alongside Courtney to promote the aforementioned tracks.
